Housing situation for first-year students in Leipzig: Waiting list for dormitory places / 200 places re-rented after modernization

For the winter semester 2024, the Student Halls of Residence of Studentenwerk Leipzig are almost fully occupied. However, around 600 students remain on the waiting list for a spot—about 400 fewer than last year. This is mainly due to the increased availability from completed modernizations and renovations in time for the start of the semester. In total, approximately 200 additional places are now available, though demand remains high. Vacated spots will be gradually allocated to students on the waiting list by the end of the year.

A particular success is the modernization of the Student Hall of Residence at Arno-Nitzsche-Straße 44, which was the first project nationwide to be completed as part of the “Junges Wohnen” (“Young Living”) program. During the renovation, 86 student housing units were upgraded, including kitchens, bathrooms, and building services, with six additional places created through layout adjustments. The total cost of the renovation amounted to approximately 6 million euros, with almost 4 million euros coming from the funding program. A single room in a 2-person shared apartment costs between 305 and 330 euros, while a single apartment is available for 370 euros—both prices include utilities and furnishings.

Renovation work was also recently completed at the Johannes-R.-Becher-Straße housing complex. In building 11A, 93 students will be able to move in, following a renovation that cost approximately 1.5 million euros.

Thanks to funding from the Federal Government and the Free State of Saxony, these modernizations can be carried out without significantly increasing rental prices. This ensures that affordable housing for students can continue to be offered while also improving the quality of living conditions.

To meet the continued high demand, Studentenwerk Leipzig, in collaboration with the City of Leipzig and the Free State of Saxony, is planning to expand capacities through future construction projects. The “Junges Wohnen” program will continue to be utilized to create much-needed student housing.
