Federal funding programme ‘Junges Wohnen’ – next dormitory modernisation started

The ‘Junges Wohnen’ construction funding programme ensures affordable student housing in Leipzig. In March 2025, we began the second modernisation project as part of the funding programme in the student hall of residence at Straße des 18. Oktober 23. By September 2026, the kitchens, bathrooms, floors, tiles and room furnishings in 88 student residences will be renovated. Some of the floor plans will be adapted. The building services (electrical, sanitary, heating and ventilation systems) and fire protection technology will also be upgraded and some doors will be replaced. Around 2.7 million of the planned costs of 4.6 million euros will be subsidised by the federal and state funding programme. We will cover the remaining costs ourselves.

Dr Andrea Diekhof, Managing Director of Studentenwerk Leipzig: ‘We are modernising in order to keep the halls of residence rentable in the long term. The subsidies from the federal and state governments help to keep our rents low. However, to ensure the sustainable and long-term refurbishment of all our halls of residence, the programme needs to be made permanent.

The modernisation of the Arno-Nitzsche-Straße 44 student hall of residence was the first project in Germany as part of the ‘Junges Wohnen’ construction funding programme. The programme is still ongoing. However, the rooms have been let again since October 2024. Studentenwerk Leipzig will receive a total of 15.6 million euros from the Young Living programme for modernisation projects in Leipzig’s student residences until 2027. Both modernisation projects will be subsidised from the first batch of the funding programme.
