Studentenwerk Leipzig has published its 2023 annual report. Despite the challenges posed by the construction crisis, numerous modernisation projects at the student residences were successfully completed. The high demand for social support services shows how important these services are for the more than 40,000 students at Leipzig’s universities.
Growing demand for support services
In 2023, the occupancy rate in the canteens and cafeterias rose to over 100% and the occupancy rate in the halls of residence averaged 98.5%. The number of BAföG applications also increased, reflecting the increased financial burden on students. In particular the need for psychosocial and social counselling remained high.
Dr. Andrea Diekhof, Managing Director of Studentenwerk Leipzig, emphasises: “The increase in demand for our services clearly shows how much of a burden the economic situation and the multiple crises of recent years have placed on students.”
Successful modernisation projects
In 2023, a total of €16.4 million was invested in the maintenance and modernisation of the buildings. Important projects included the modernisation of the halls of residence at Mainzer Straße 2a, Joh.-R.-Becher-Straße 11B and Mannheimer Straße 5-7. These measures ensure affordable and needs-based living space for students.
“Thanks to the funding from the federal government and the Free State of Saxony from the federal “Junges Wohnen” programme, we can guarantee affordable housing for students in Leipzig despite inflation,” says Diekhof.
