RaumTeiler is a customized living solution when …
- you only need accommodation for a few months to arrive in Leipzig or during your exchange semester,
- you want to get involved socially and would like to reduce your rent by providing support services,
- you would like to live in an intergenerational and/or intercultural shared flat,
- you value personal interaction and are looking for more than just a place to live – a home with a connection,
- you prefer a sustainable housing alternative and would like to help put unused living space to good use,
- you are looking for a long-term housing option where you can live in an open and communal atmosphere.
Who can take part in RaumTeiler?
RaumTeiler is aimed at all students who are enrolled at one of the universities associated with Studentenwerk Leipzig. Whether you are just starting your studies, doing an exchange semester or looking for new accommodation – RaumTeiler will help you find suitable accommodation.
Models for the duration of housing
- Long-term rental of housing
In this model, you rent the accommodation for a longer period of time, ideally for your entire degree programme or for several years.
- Short-term rental of housing
This model is particularly flexible, ideal for students who are looking for temporary accommodation during their arrival phase in Leipzig. You can look for your own flat or shared flat during this time. Students who are in Leipzig for an exchange semester can also find housing for a few months in this way.
Models for the provision of housing
- Living for rent
With this model, you rent the accommodation for a fixed monthly rent, which can vary depending on the offer. It is a classic rental agreement that offers you long-term, stable housing.
- Living in exchange for support
In this model, you can either reduce the rent by providing assistance with household chores, shopping or other tasks, or just pay the service charges. This allows you to use your housing flexibly and cost-effectively, while at the same time taking on social responsibility and contributing to the community. This model is particularly suitable for students who are looking for a sustainable and supportive housing solution.

- 2. Registration for mediation
So that we can help you in a targeted manner, please complete the registration form, which contains important information about your housing requirements and any support services. You can complete the registration form in various ways:
- In a personal interview at our office.
- Alternatively, you can complete the form online, sign it and send it to raumteiler@studentenwerk-leipzig.de.
- 3. The placement begins
You will receive a confirmation once we have received your application form. The project coordinator will then contact you to discuss your profile and requirements in more detail.
- 4. Customized placement proposal
Once you have completed the application and had a personal meeting with the project coordinator, you will be given access to our password-protected list of adverts. You can then contact the coordinator when you have found an advert that suits you. If the housing provider is interested, the project coordinator will exchange contact details to arrange a meeting.
- 5. First contact and getting to know each other
The first contact ideally takes place at the home of the person providing the housing or in the project coordinator’s office. If you wish, further meetings can also be arranged to get to know each other better.
- 6. Decision and conclusion of contract
If you feel that it’s a good fit, let us know – by phone or e-mail. The housing provider will then draw up a tenancy agreement setting out the rental costs and possible support services. If it doesn’t work out, please let us know and let us know why it didn’t work out so that we can make further improvements. We will then look for a new proposal for you.
- 7. Guidance and support
The project coordinator, Mrs Bohmann, is available to you as a contact person throughout the entire process – for questions or in the event of a conflict if this cannot be resolved independently between you and the housing provider.
Questions and Answers
- What support do I need to provide if I want to live for a reduced rent?
It is advisable to apply early in order to have more choice, especially for short-term housing offers.
- How is the rent determined?
The rent can either be set on the basis of a tenancy agreement or reduced by the support you provide. In some cases, you can also only pay service charges if you offer help.
- Do I have to live in a shared flat or are there also individual flats?
The offers can be in shared flats as well as in individual flats. It all depends on what is available and what you want.
- What happens if I realise after getting to know someone that it doesn’t work out?
If it doesn’t work out, just let us know. We will then look for another offer for you and help you further.
- How much does it cost to take part in RaumTeiler?
Participation in RaumTeiler is free of charge.
- What requirements must the living space fulfil?
The accommodation should meet the basic requirements, such as privacy, access to the necessary facilities (kitchen, bathroom) and a good location for your studies. You can specify the exact requirements in the application form.
- How long does it take to find a suitable offer?
The duration varies depending on availability and your requirements. As a rule, we endeavour to make you a suitable offer within a few weeks. However, it can also take longer, depending on the applications received.
- As an international student, do I have to speak German to take part in RaumTeiler?
A basic knowledge of German is an advantage, as communication with the housing providers is usually in German. In some cases, it is also sufficient if you speak English.
- Can I flexibly organise the support I provide?
Yes, the type of support you provide can be adapted to your time and availability. You discuss individually with the housing providers what support you would like to and can provide.
- Are all flats and rooms furnished?
That depends on what the housing provider offers. Some offer furnished rooms, others do not. This will be discussed in detail during the placement process.
- Are pets allowed?
This depends on the individual offers of the housing providers. In many cases, pets are not allowed, but there are also offers where pets are welcome. Discuss this during the placement process.
