Position paper after violent assault on transgender student of Leipzig University
“Last week we learned with utter dismay of the verbal and physical assault on a transgender person studying at the University of Leipzig.
We strongly oppose such attacks.
As actors/actresses of society, we position ourselves clearly against all forms of hatred and violence.
For this reason, we strongly condemn every kind of assault.
We stand for an open and unprejudiced society.
We take a stand against any form of violence, hostility or discrimination of people because of their gender, skin colour, origin, age, personal status, appearance, nationality, sexual orientation, religious belief and mental or physical impairment.
As institutions of scientific and social life, we unreservedly support a society without discrimination.
We demand a proactive and serious debate about existing prejudices and want to raise awareness for group exclusion and violence.
For prevention, more far-reaching offers must be created so that such issues are not dealt with only after such appalling acts have been committed.
We call for a broad coalition of supporters to establish tolerance towards different life situations.”
